Pre-Installation Tips & Checklist

Preparing Your Space for a Smooth Appliance Installation

At Homery, we want to make sure your appliance installation goes smoothly from start to finish. To help you get ready for installation day, we’ve gathered expert tips and advice that ensure your space is prepared, your utilities are in order, and everything fits as expected.

Follow these essential pre-installation steps to make the process hassle-free and ensure your appliances perform at their best from the very first day.

Tip 1: Measure, Measure, Measure

Accurate measurements are key to avoiding surprises on installation day. Before purchasing an appliance, measure the designated space carefully—width, height, and depth—and compare it to the appliance’s specifications. Remember to consider doors, drawers, and other moving parts that need space to operate properly.

Checklist:

  • Measure the space where the appliance will be installed.

  • Measure doorways, hallways, and staircases to ensure the appliance can fit through on delivery day.

  • Allow enough clearance around the appliance for proper airflow, door swing, and utility connections.

Tip 2: Clear the Area

Before the installers arrive, make sure the space where the appliance will be installed is completely clear. Remove furniture, decor, and any obstacles from the installation area, and ensure there’s a clear path from the delivery point (doorway or elevator) to the installation site.

Checklist:

  • Remove furniture and other items from the installation area.

  • Keep pets and children safely out of the way.

  • Provide clear access through doorways, hallways, and staircases.

Tip 3: Check Utility Connections

Ensure that your home’s utility connections are ready for installation. This includes water lines for refrigerators, dishwashers, and washing machines, as well as electrical outlets and gas lines for ranges, stoves, and dryers.

Checklist:

  • Confirm that water shut-off valves are accessible and functional.

  • Ensure there’s a dedicated electrical outlet for the appliance.

  • For gas appliances, make sure the gas line is installed and ready for connection.

  • If any utility lines need to be installed or modified, schedule a licensed plumber or electrician before installation day.

Tip 4: Plan for Door Swing

Many appliances, including refrigerators, ovens, and dishwashers, require space for doors or drawers to open fully. Make sure there’s enough clearance in front of and beside the appliance to allow for smooth operation.

Checklist:

  • Check the door swing range in the installation space.

  • Make sure doors won’t hit walls, cabinets, or other appliances.

  • For refrigerators, consider whether door hinges need to be reversed to fit your kitchen layout.
